How to Pack Up and Put Up Your Inflatable Paddle Board

We recently wrote a blog about planning an epic summer SUP holiday. If you didn’t see that one, be sure to check it out here. That post is chock full of ace tips for SUP fun all around Australia in summer. As we were researching for that blog, we were a bit flummoxed to find out that a whole lot of our SUP mates never take their boards on holiday. Say what? It’s unfortunately true.
That’s why in this blog, we’re jotting down some simple steps for how to pack up and put up your inflatable paddle board for an epic summer holiday (or simply for storage).

First Things First: Clean Your Board

Whatever you do, do NOT store or pack up a dirty board. Sand, salt and debris can damage your board, especially when left on the surfaces over time. So do your board and your budget a favor and take the time to give everything a good clean before you do anything else.

Of course, all iROCKERs are built tough to stand up to bumps, debris and even a bit of sand. But left over time, sand and salt can cause damage to virtually any material. Here’s how to give your board the good and gentle clean it craves:

  1. Give it a good hosing off with fresh water. Don’t use a sponge or a shammy at this point. Just a whole lot of running water on all sides, including your accessories.
  2. The next thing you want to do is give your board a good wash with a board-friendly and reef-safe soap, using a soft cloth like this one.
  3. Give it a good rinse. Better yet, rinse it twice.
  4. Once there’s no sign of suds, it’s time to give everything a good dry. The same type of shammy you scrubbed with should do the trick. A few minutes in the sun won’t hurt, either. Take your time with this because proper drying is important for safe storage. (More on this in a bit.)

Tip: Since you’re taking the time to get your board and gear good and cleaning, this is also a great time to check everything out for wear and tear. For example, is your carry strap still strong? Is your fin in good shape? If anything is ready for replacement, start making a list so you can order new gear before your next SUP sesh.

Second: Invest in the Right Equipment for the Job

Once every centimeter of your board and your accessories are squeaky clean, it’s time to deflate your board for packing up. Two keys to proper packing up are a good pump and a great storage bag.
If you don’t already have a Full Throttle HP6 Hand Pump, you’re going to want to get one ASAP. It’s aces for inflating and deflating your paddle board in minutes.
Tip: You can find some awesome info here about the right way to inflate and deflate your board.
Once all the air is out of your board, you’ll want to break down your paddle, detach your fin and accessories, and pack everything into a good quality bag made specifically for inflatable paddle boards. Trying to pack your iROCKER and all the parts into a gym bag or regular duffel is like putting vegemite on a lolly. You don’t want to go there!
Fortunately, we’ve got the perfect bags for you and — double bonus — they’re included free with iROCKER and BLACKFIN board packages! If you’re in the market for a new bag or a new board, you need to check this out.

Third: Make Space, Mate

Once you’ve got your equipment clean, dry and properly packed, you’ve got to store it all in a safe place. Seems simple — find an open corner in the robe, right? Wrong!
First, you don’t want to crowd or smash your bag and board. Second, you need to give everything some breathing room, especially if you’re storing things away for more than a few days.
Like other sporting equipment, your board, accessories and pack need fresh air in a spot with low moisture (to prevent mould) and out of direct sunlight. And you definitely don’t want to store anything else on top of your pack because this can crush everything inside and cause damage, especially over time.
Remember! You want to make sure everything is 100% dry before you pack it away.
